The sincere open smile gives the feeling of the warm friendly atmosphere and improves the mood. Maybe the largest number of smiles was presented to the world by Harvey Bell. Harvey Bell is also the author of of the World Smile Day which is celebrated on the first Friday of October. But how could Harvey Bell managed to become the champion in smiling? In the beginning of 60s the unknown artist Harvey Ball was ready to carry any order out. One of these orders was to develop the logo for an insurance company. According to the demands of the company that should be a bright easy-to-remember and simple symbol that would remind the members of the stuff that it was necessary to smile at the clients while signing the contracts. Harvey Bell managed to fulfill the order within less than ten minutes. His earned income was 45 USD. This was the only money he had ever received for his work. However the company appreciated the talent of Harvey Ball and ordered 10 000 of the badges with that smile.
Michael Wolf is a photographer who pictures our life and demonstrates how absurd and weird it seems to be from outside. Due to his photos one might realize how usual things appear to be odd and really strange. We are stuck in a rut and sometimes hardly notice what surrounds us, what we face every day.
Michael Wolf was born in Munich, Germany but was raised in the United States. As a photographer he became well known for his pictures of China and Chinese reality. His books Sitting in China and China im Wandel are devoted to the Celestial Empire. One of the most interesting projects by Wolf is dedicated to Hong Kong. Architecture of Density depicts complex architectural constructions in Hong Kong. The area is supposed to be the most densely populated in the world. Lots of people are dreaming to move to HK especially from Mainland China. The facades of those buildings remind strange abstractions. “…in Hong Kong I had the good fortune of photographing my Architecture of Density series in a way which hadn’t been done before that rigorously. I cropped every building that there was no sky and no horizon so the result was that you had a very tight picture which could be credibly large because you had no idea where the building ended on the sides and on the top”. At the same time pictures of Hong Kond by Wolf are very precise as Hong Kong is very overpopulated area. “… it suddenly became a statement on how we live in mega cities”.
When the 43-year-old Lyman Frank Baum brought his manuscript of his fairy tale to one of the American publishing agencies the editor refused to publish it, having said that “if there was any need in American fairy tales there would be some publications already”. The U. S. Literature has less fairy tales than any other national one in fact. The Wizard of Oz still remains the best American fairy tale liked by both the infant and adult readers. Lyman Frank Baum was born on the 15th of May in 19856 in New York. His father had invested his money to the oil business and the financial state of his family wasn’t that bad. But the health of the children was rater poor. The first three children had died before they turned 10, and the fourth one-Frank- survived but was suffering from the heart disease during all his life. As it often happens the weak and fragile boy was fond of reading. His favorite authors were Charles Dickens and William Thackeray. While being a teenager Frank Baum published the improvised magazine, as his father managed to buy a typewriter and other devices needed for publishing.
